I was quite surprised to see http://go-dl1.eve-files.com/media/0708/eve-boom-headshot.JPG on the front page of the eve-o website. I would have thought that even in cartoons that this kind of imagery would be considered over the top.
Or maybe thats just me and all the bf1942/hl2 people who play this game will tell me that I suck for not liking it |

Not just me bored at work then. Who would have thought a quite simple statement about my personal feelings on a picture would have brought out the vehemence and downright stupidity vomited onto this thread by some of the whorums.
Let me say it again in a slightly different way -> I personally find fictional or real pictures of people getting shot in the head to be distasteful (at best). That does not make me a carebear/blind/communist/elephant (delete as applicable).
So you disagree? great, make a post without the personal attacks.

Originally by: Asestorian Anyway. Personally I see nothing wrong with that picture. The chronicles and art of EVE are there to show us just what kind of world it is. And CCP wish it to be dark, cruel and violent. This means that they have to write and draw in ways that bring this vision to life, or it's pointless.
It shows us what kind of world it is?? I never knew I could dock up, hop out of my spaceship and run around shooting people in the heads. No wonder people were calling it counterstrike in space.
Quote: You are not forced to read the stories, or look at the artwork for them. But they should not be censored.
It was on the front page, not somewhere I frequent too often but unavoidable none the less.

A broad personal attack? a cluster personal attack perhaps? maybe this comment is a narrow personal attack?
Quote: Saying we are all gun crazed and so obsessed with headshots that we play gun games all day is definitely not any sort of insult. Calling you a carebear is an insult, though. I respect your view completely. Since this is too graphic lets censor it from everyone.
Er, I dont know if you are trying to be sarcastic or you completely messed up the order of those words. Where I am from describing anyone with the word "crazed" in it is fighting talk. And you can call me a carebear all you like, this is an alt and any comment you make about my combat prowess is talking out of your bottom.
Playing EVE does not involve me pulling triggers to shoot people in the head, in fact it does not involve peoples avatars at all (so far), thats mainly why I play it.

Not to flame but honestly: If you find this distastefull why did you pick a game that is billed as a dark future world?
There was no sign of this backstory when I started playing, and while some people may think that they picked the game because of the backstory ... they are actually talking bull (to win an internet argument lulz) |

Proof?
I'd say this is the average age of the owners of the credit cards that are used to pay, unless they used the "date of birth" field from the Account Details page, where you can enter anything you want.
Indeed, how many 16 year olds have a credit card.

Originally by: CCP Abraxas So far the chronicles have featured all manners of torture, mutilation, suffering, violent deaths, drug use and, on one memorable occasion, projectile vomiting.
Any other facets of life? gardening, going for a swim, sex?
But yes I can see the reason for it, eye catching pictures to encourage people to click and read the chronicle.
Quote:
They have also featured reflections and commentary on life, love, the meaning of relationships, fatherhood, handicapped right to life, ethics, change and transcendence.
Any pictures of any of the above? I am especially interested in the love one and a nice picture of transcendence would be lovely.

I am not the only one to find the picture distasteful, merely the only one bored enough to endure the flames (and flame back).
And yes I blocked the pic in firefox, (before I even made the OP) but for some reason I cannot post with firefox because I got thrown back to the login screen any time I click on the quote or reply to topic links ..... so I still see it in IE

Anything I would have said has echoed through this thread many times and the radioactive alt ignores most of it. Just for clarification, you can censor all the content you don't want to see on your computer. I can not get something uncensored if the only version of it is something you would condone.
The whole problem with this thread is that radioactive alt wants to censor what others see. I do not have any qualms with what he/she likes or does not like. Trying to tell CCP that something is too brutal and implying no one else should see this violent version is rather tasteless don't you think?
Tell me where I said remove it. I said I considered it distasteful and over the top. The main reason for this topic was discussion ... I should have known better.
And I believe I quoted most of your dribble, but could not bring myself to quote verbal dung like "What is mature content is what you can skip and not read." which started as a question and ended as a statement that is flawed (hint, you have to read the content to see if it is "mature") .... oh and "Just because you find the world full of sunshine does not mean that everyone else deserves to have wool over their eyes and to feign ignorance of any violence.", I live in south east London, I see plenty of violence, thats why I play MMO's.

Originally by: Miss Terry I will often read the forums and stories while at home, it is where I work. My 5 yr. old son saw this picture and asked what was happening, I made up some story to sugar coat it.
It sucks for me because now I have to work and can't read the stories. The forums, though amusing at times, are very predictable. Hello Kitty, quit then, you suck and all that.
Whorums are more discourteous because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split open, as a general thing. My 5 year old can't read, see predictable like a bad movie.

Originally by: BranBresil Edited by: BranBresil on 29/08/2007 15:01:10 Frankly I think anyone stating that it's tasteless and asking in a round a bout way if it could be avoided in the future is over reacting. I for one simply can't comprehend how a relatively non-graphically violent piece of art like that could be considered tasteless, so I'm somewhat at a loss as far as trying to understand where the OP is coming from... Sure you may not particularly like it but that doesn't make it tasteless. I frankly prefer the art style used elsewhere over the one of this particular picture, I consider it too cartoony personally, not gritty or detailed enough, whereas I quite like the art of the methods of torture pics. If anything mentioned in this thread was tasteless it was the gratuitous smear against the FPS crowd in the beginning. Though I'd still chalk that up so simply poor judgement on the OPs part. But their request does boil down to censorship, which I lean against in all cases. But I end up being quite libertarian on this, I don't particularly think racist, sexist, crude humor, etc comments should be censored either, I trust the community to deal with them appropriately via replies or in game player action, so I'm probably somewhat of a minority on this issue I suppose. Eitherway the main point of this post is to add another voice asking that we keep the business as usual. The EVE universe is great just because it's so ruthless and cut throat. The methods of torture and tales of vigilantes add a flavor to the game backstory that I quite enjoy. And I was also one of those somewhat puzzled by the "are you an american by any chance?" comment, on the one hand I'm American so I take mild offense to any implication American's have anything wrong with em, heh. On the other hand, other than politicians mumbling about violence in video games every now and then as a pet issue, I have no clue what that person could be referring to, since if anything we're somewhat proud of our willingness to employ violence when other remedies won't work, instead of ***** footing around an issue.
But yeah, Abbraxas, keep that series coming I look forward to the next installment, preferably with another suitably violent piece of art. *wink wink, nudge nudge*
I have to say that I dont go to the front page very much and so dont see many of the pics for the chronicles. I did see some of them (and all of the ones that turned up on the side of the forums) and they never struck me as particularly violent or gory. Its just this particular one that I perceive as tasteless, not all of them.
I always like a gratuituous smear against fps players, generally they used to come back fighting but sadly here to turn to trolling
I also do not like to limit other peoples choices, perhaps a middle ground could be hit though if CCP privoded a preferences page where I did not have to load any pictures/sigs/avatars, it would make me happy and I also would not have look at rubbish sigs (obviously they are not all rubbish, but some look like bird droppings)
As for the American thing, I think it is fair to say King Liu is a spanner!!
